Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, following the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other situations, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a point.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further change at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
